To My American Readers
La Villa Gillet and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York supported the second international festival of literature, World Voices, which took place in New York from 25-30 April 2006 by publishing To my American Readers, a free 48-page newspaper in English in partnership with the PEN American Center and with the support of the French Foreign Office. To my American Readers, distributed in New York (notably by Barnes and Noble) and by independent bookshops all over America, provides an overview of French literature, contemporary social and human sciences and philosophy. It presents the work of nine novelists and nine essayists through the publication of previously unpublished extracts from their recent books, accompanied by a ‘letter to Americans’ in which each author explains the meaning and the significance of their writing, revealing the originality of their work. Sophie Barluet, Fabienne Dumontet and Dominique Viart contributed three critical articles, evaluating the state of literature, social sciences and editorial policy in France for the past ten years. An interview with two translators, Elisabeth Peellaert and Alyson Waters examines the work of translation today. Distribued in New York (New York Public Library, independent bookshops, festival venues, most Barnes and Noble stores…) and throughout America, To my American Readers is also available on-line via the Villa Gillet website and the French Embassy’s Cultural Services website (www.frenchbooknews.com).
